Average weather in Brighton
Even in the middle of winter, the average maximum temperature is 8°C. You’ll definitely want to have the central heating turned on, but you can still enjoy a walk along the beach when the sun’s out. During the night, the average low is 2.1°C in January, barely cold enough to frost up your car windscreen.
When it gets stormy in Brighton, it’s best to head away from the beach towards the historic Lanes. Here, the narrow alleyways will shelter you from the wind, and you can enjoy visiting the quirky shops and cafes.
Summer at the beach
Towards the other end of the scale, the average high in August is 20.8°C. At this time of year the beaches are packed, with people enjoying swimming in the sea off Brighton beach. The beach stretches for miles in each direction. If you want more space you could take the Volks Railway towards Brighton marina, or head in the other direction towards quieter Hove.
Maximum temperature
In recent times, the highest recorded maximum temperature in summer has been 31°C. Definitely high enough to make you doubt you really are in the UK. Don’t worry though, as even at these temperatures you can cool off in the sea, which reaches a maximum of only 17°C.
If that’s too extreme, visit one of the many ice cream parlours on the beach and in town, such as Gelato Gusto.
If you’re visiting for the first time, hopefully you’ll have some ideas about what the weather is like in Brighton. Much like the rest of the UK, it’s safe to say that it’s best to pack for any weather as it’s typically changeable and not predictable. That’s the only certainty.
